Why is eSIM not working on your iPhone? Check the line before deleting anything

Citește în română

Open Settings and find Cellular, Mobile Data or Mobile Service; the label varies by region. Look for the eSIM, check that its line is on and see which line is selected for mobile data. This is the best place to start when an installed eSIM has no connection.

Those checks separate a missing installation from a connected line with the wrong data settings. Keep the eSIM installed while investigating; deletion can require a replacement from the provider. Apple's eSIM deletion guidance

Match the message to the problem

Message or symptomWhat to investigate
No Add eSIM optionExact model and sales region, device restrictions and provider support
SIM not supportedCarrier lock, compatibility and the provider's activation method
Code no longer validWhether the profile is already installed or the code needs reissue
ActivatingInternet access, provider provisioning and destination activation rules
SOS, No Service or SearchingNetwork registration, coverage and account status
Signal but no internetWhich line has signal, data selection, allowance, roaming and APN
Data works but iMessage or calls do notMessaging registration, voice service and line selection

Do not treat all of these as a reason to scan the same QR code again.

1. Confirm the phone can use the purchased service

Check the exact model and where it was sold. Regional variants can differ. If the phone belongs to your employer, ask whether management restrictions affect adding a line.

In Settings > General > About, check the carrier-lock entry. An unlocked phone normally shows "No SIM restrictions." If it is locked, contact the original carrier; the travel provider cannot remove that lock with an activation code. Apple's international eSIM guidance

Do this before purchasing a replacement package. Buying twice will not change device compatibility.

2. Look for the installed profile

In the mobile-service settings, inspect the SIM list. A profile can appear under an unfamiliar label, especially if you have several old travel lines.

If it exists, open it and enable the line. If it does not, follow the provider's installation instructions on reliable Wi-Fi or another permitted connection.

For an activation problem, Apple recommends an airplane-mode cycle, turning an existing line off and on, and restarting. Use those reversible steps before asking the provider to investigate provisioning. Apple's activation troubleshooting

If the provider says the plan starts only in the destination, a status shown while you are still at home may not establish a fault. Check the actual activation rule rather than waiting an arbitrary number of hours.

3. Set the data line deliberately

Choose the travel eSIM under Cellular Data or Mobile Data. Then inspect Allow Cellular Data Switching if it is available. During a test, you need to know which line supplies the connection.

Turning switching off can help keep a test on the selected line, but it also affects how Dual SIM behaves during calls. Apple documents interactions between calls, data switching and Wi-Fi Calling, so do not treat every temporary no-service indicator during a call as a broken eSIM. Apple's Dual SIM guidance

Keep your home line's billing rules in mind. Disabling data roaming does not, by itself, prevent every possible voice or messaging charge.

4. Check the package and roaming requirement

Open the provider account over Wi-Fi and confirm the destination, remaining data and expiry. If the plan requires data roaming, enable it on the travel line specified by the provider.

Check that you are testing in a covered country. A regional product's name does not establish every included destination.

Temporarily disconnect Wi-Fi and open a small webpage. If it loads, test another service. If only one app fails, check that app's permission to use cellular data and its account status before changing the eSIM again.

5. Check carrier settings and APN only where relevant

Connect to Wi-Fi and open Settings > General > About to check for a carrier-settings update. If no update is offered, move on; do not install a profile found on a forum. Apple's no-service checks

Only change the APN when the provider supplies the correct value. Apple says APN visibility and editing depend on the carrier, and incorrect settings can interrupt data service. Apple's APN instructions

If the field is absent, send that information to support. Do not invent a value based on the network name shown on screen.

When to contact the provider

Escalate if installation is rejected, the account looks active but eligible networks never connect, or the same error survives the relevant checks. Include your exact iPhone model, software version, location, order reference and error wording.

Ask support to confirm whether the profile is installed correctly, whether the package is provisioned and which network should be available. Share identifiers privately only when necessary. Keep passwords and QR codes out of public screenshots.

A full erase or eSIM deletion should not be your next guess. Establish the replacement process first. For a concise sequence you can follow while traveling, use the immediate recovery checklist.
