eSIM not working? What to do when you need a connection now
Keep the eSIM profile installed. Check the selected data line and whether the package is active, then follow the steps below. Test after each change and stop when the connection works.
If you are standing in an arrivals hall, first find a safe place to stop and connect to a trusted Wi-Fi network if one is available. Save your accommodation address and immediate transport information. Restoring the eSIM is easier when you are not also trying to remember where you need to go.
1. Check whether the eSIM is actually on the phone
Open the phone's SIM or mobile-service settings and look for the travel profile. Its label may be a network name rather than the brand you bought from.
If it is missing, you have an installation problem. Return to the provider's instructions using a reliable connection. Check the exact phone compatibility and any carrier lock before trying again.
If the code says it has already been used, stop rescanning. Look for an installed profile and ask the provider to check the order. Repeated purchases can create several orders without fixing the original issue.
2. Make sure the package should work here and now
Check the current country against the purchased coverage list. Then check balance, expiry and whether the plan requires a separate activation step.
The word "installed" only describes the profile. It does not prove the package is active or still has data.
If the allowance has expired or run out, settings changes will not restore it. Review an eligible top-up or another suitable package, including its new validity, before paying.
3. Select the travel line for mobile data
Enable the travel line and choose it as the data SIM. Check that you have not only selected it for calls.
Follow the provider's instructions for data roaming on that line. Keep the home line's roaming and charging rules separate. If your phone offers automatic data switching, review it so a test does not silently use the home line instead.
Android wording varies. Samsung, for example, groups mobile-network options under Connections and warns that settings depend on the carrier. Use your model's instructions when the screen differs. Samsung's connection settings
4. Reconnect once, then test
Turn airplane mode on briefly and off again. Wait for network registration; restart the phone if it remains stuck. Apple includes an airplane-mode cycle, checking the enabled line and restarting in its activation guidance. Apple's eSIM activation troubleshooting
With Wi-Fi temporarily off, load a small webpage. If it works, try a second site. Stop changing settings once mobile data is working reliably.
Do not use a long video or a large speed test as the first check. You only need to establish that the intended connection works.
5. Use plan-specific settings if the simple checks fail
Read the installation email or app for an APN requirement and supported networks. If you are told to enter an APN, copy that provider's value exactly. On iPhone, the carrier controls whether APN fields can be viewed or edited. A missing field is not an invitation to install a random configuration profile. Apple's APN guidance
Start with automatic network selection. Change to manual only when the provider's instructions call for it, and select an eligible network.
If data works for websites but not one app, stop changing the SIM. Check that app's cellular-data permission and service status instead.
6. Know when to stop troubleshooting alone
Contact the seller if the code is rejected, the profile is missing after an apparent installation, supported networks repeatedly refuse registration, or the package looks active but never provides data.
Avoid deleting the profile, resetting the whole phone or repeatedly purchasing replacements while waiting. First establish how the provider will restore or replace the service. A network-settings reset also changes saved connection settings, so it should be a deliberate later step with model-specific instructions, not the opening move.
Use this message to shorten the support exchange:
My order reference is [reference]. I am in [country and city]. My phone is [exact model] on [software version]. The eSIM [does/does not] appear in settings. I see [exact error or network status]. It is selected for data, and the package shows [balance and expiry]. I have tried [steps]. Please check the profile and network provisioning and confirm the next safe action.

If you need a backup connection
Use a trusted Wi-Fi connection, a companion's permitted hotspot or a home-operator pass whose price you have checked. A local SIM or another eSIM is also an option once you know the phone is compatible and the problem is not a carrier lock.
Keep the original receipt and support conversation. Buying a fallback does not establish that the first purchase is refundable; ask under the applicable terms.
For the reasons behind each symptom, read why an eSIM stops working. On an iPhone, the device-specific guide explains the relevant menus in more detail.
