Which eSIM is best for China? Check app access before comparing gigabytes
If you need Google, WhatsApp and similar services in mainland China, start by investigating Nomad's current China packages. Its official guide addresses access to those apps. Confirm the selected offer and install before arrival. You can also compare Airalo and Saily, but a China data package alone does not establish which apps will work.
This is a recommendation based on published terms, not a speed test or a guarantee that a service will remain reachable throughout your trip.
Why China needs a different buying checklist
Two plans can connect to a mobile network in the same city and still give you different access to websites. The way traffic is routed matters.
UK travel guidance says Chinese authorities control internet access and lists Google, Facebook, YouTube and X among blocked services. A working signal indicator does not mean every app will work. UK government guidance on internet access
Some international travel eSIMs route traffic outside mainland China. Nomad states that its current China plans can access services including Google, WhatsApp and Instagram without separately configuring a VPN. Treat that as the provider's claim about its service, and verify it for the plan you choose. Nomad's China compatibility and setup guide
An eSIM is not itself a VPN. Being able to open a website also does not establish privacy, anonymity or compliance with an employer's security rules.
A practical shortlist
| Option | Why consider it | What still needs checking |
|---|---|---|
| Nomad China | Its guide explicitly discusses access to commonly restricted international apps | Exact plan, current routing, activation and any limits |
| Airalo China | Its product page identifies China Unicom and offers different package durations | App access, hotspot and whether the package matches your itinerary |
| Saily China | An alternative if you want to manage travel data in the Saily service | Mainland-only coverage, current app access and pre-arrival setup |
| Your home operator's roaming | You may already have an account and a familiar support route | China allowance, price, routing and work-policy compatibility |

Ask support a precise question: "Does this exact package currently allow Gmail and WhatsApp on mobile data in mainland China, and does the same apply to a laptop using hotspot?" Save the answer and the package name. "Works in China" is not a sufficient reply.
Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao need separate checks
Do not infer coverage from a country label. Saily's China page explicitly says its China travel plan does not cover Hong Kong or Macao. A regional package may have a different list. Saily's China coverage information
For a Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Shanghai itinerary, list each stop and check it against the exact package. Include a stopover if you plan to use mobile data there.
One regional plan can be simpler, but two country packages can also be reasonable if the terms and price work out. Compare the whole itinerary instead of choosing whichever country page has the lowest starting price.
Buy and install before arrival
Nomad's current guide says new plans cannot be purchased after entering mainland China, while eligible add-ons to an existing active plan are a separate process. Do not make an airport purchase your only plan. Nomad's pre-arrival instructions
Before departure, check the activation clock, install on a reliable connection and save the confirmation, setup instructions and support route offline. Prepare any apps and accounts you expect to use. Do not leave the first login to an essential work account until after landing.
Keep the original eSIM profile if something goes wrong. Buying another plan or deleting the installed profile can make recovery harder when purchasing or downloading is restricted.
Does your phone support the service?
Check the model and sales region, especially if the phone was purchased in mainland China. Device capability, support for a local carrier's eSIM and use of an international travel eSIM are separate questions. Apple's current guidance contains region-specific conditions, so a blanket claim that every recent iPhone works would be misleading. Apple's international eSIM guidance
Also check carrier unlock. A compatible phone can still reject another provider's service if it is locked.
What happens when you switch to hotel Wi-Fi?
Your mobile plan's routing does not determine how the hotel's network reaches the internet. An app might work on the eSIM and stop working when Wi-Fi connects automatically.
If that happens, test again with Wi-Fi off before treating it as an eSIM failure. For work, arrange an approved connection method with your IT team before traveling.
Finally, separate connectivity from local registration. A data-only package does not automatically provide a mainland telephone number or satisfy every payment app's identity checks. Save accommodation details and a backup contact method, then use the recovery checklist if mobile data itself fails.
