Choose for your trip
Which eSIM is best for Italy? Check your existing roaming first
Check your existing roaming allowance before buying an eSIM for Italy. An eligible EU/EEA plan may already cover the trip. If you need extra travel data, compare Saily and Airalo for Italy alone. Add Orange Travel's voice-capable regional packages if you also need ordinary calls or coverage for several countries.
Those are different needs, so they deserve different recommendations. A single "best overall" label would hide the trade-offs.
When you may not need an Italy eSIM
Eligible roaming within the EU generally uses domestic pricing, subject to fair use and your plan's conditions. Italy is within that area. A generous domestic allowance does not necessarily mean you can use the same unlimited amount abroad. EU roaming guidance
Open your operator's app and find the roaming allowance for Italy. Check that roaming is enabled on the account, the available GB will last the trip, and what happens after you use them.
If those answers work for you, keep the existing service. A second eSIM becomes useful when you need extra data, a separate work connection or coverage on a wider itinerary that your current plan does not suit.
A shortlist based on what you need
| Your priority | Start with | Why it belongs on the shortlist |
|---|---|---|
| A modest amount of prepaid data | Saily Italy | Its product cards make allowance and validity easy to compare |
| Comparing data options and published network access | Airalo Italy | Its Italy page shows Wind Tre as the primary network and additional network options |
| Ordinary calls and SMS during a European trip | Orange Travel's data, calls and SMS packages | Voice-capable packages serve a different need from data alone |
| Existing EU/EEA allowance already covers the holiday | Your home plan | You may avoid a second purchase entirely |
The checked pages were Saily Italy, Airalo Italy and Orange Travel Europe. These observations come from provider listings, not independent network testing.
For a straightforward holiday with maps and messaging, compare a fixed allowance first. For example, Saily's Italy page displayed 3 GB for 30 days at €7.99 during research on 30 September 2026. That is a dated example, not a claim that it is Italy's cheapest offer.
Rome for five days or Italy for three weeks?
Write down what you will actually use. Maps, tickets and messages create a different data budget from daily video uploads and laptop work.
For an illustrative five-day budget of 0.4 GB a day, you would need 2 GB before adding a buffer. For a three-week trip, do the calculation again instead of buying the same package because the brand is familiar.
Look at validity before price per GB. A cheap short-duration package can expire while most of its allowance is unused. Check top-up pricing as well, especially if you are buying a smaller bundle to keep the initial cost down.
Switzerland, ferries and border crossings
An Italy-only plan should not be assumed to cover a day trip across the border. A regional package should not be assumed to cover every country described as European either. Switzerland, for example, needs a specific coverage check rather than an assumption based on EU roaming.
If your itinerary includes France, Austria or Switzerland, compare the destination list against the entire route. Keep a copy of that list with your booking information.
Ferries create a different question. EU roaming protections concern terrestrial mobile networks; maritime satellite services can have different, expensive charging arrangements. A mainland data package is not a promise of internet at sea. EU guidance on ships and roaming
Need to call an accommodation or restaurant?
A data-only eSIM can support internet calling apps, but the person you want to reach may use an ordinary telephone number. Decide how you will make that call before buying.
You might use an included home-plan allowance, a suitable internet-calling service, or a travel package with voice. If comparing Orange Travel, select the category that actually includes calls and SMS and read the permitted destinations and number conditions. Do not assume every Orange package includes the same services.
Coverage deserves a specific question
For countryside accommodation, islands or a mountain route, ask which local network the exact plan uses. Check the relevant location with that network's coverage information. A plan advertised for Italy cannot guarantee reception inside a stone building, through a tunnel or throughout a remote hike.
Download tickets and useful map areas before leaving a reliable connection. For essential work calls, keep another connection option available.
Choose the package after those checks, then follow its installation and activation instructions. If you will cross several countries, the Europe guide gives a more suitable comparison. If the plan is already installed but will not connect, start with the troubleshooting guide.
