Mexico is outside EU roaming. Install a compatible travel eSIM before departure or compare a registered local option after arrival. Save the airport pickup point, accommodation address in Spanish, and any resort or intercity transfer offline.

## What to know before you land

- EU roaming does not apply in Mexico.
- Mexico City and resort arrivals create different transport needs.
- Coverage maps are planning tools, not guarantees for highways or remote beaches.

## Mexico City and a resort transfer are different data problems

A city arrival may continue by metro, bus, or arranged pickup. A Cancún, Riviera Maya, or regional trip can add a long road transfer where the pickup message and destination need to be saved.

IFT publishes mobile coverage maps, while airport and city transport authorities publish arrival information. Use each for its purpose and keep critical instructions outside the connection.

## Choose the connection that fits the trip

- Check your home plan first. Roaming may already be included, but fair-use limits and calls can differ from domestic use.
- A local SIM can suit a longer stay or a traveler who needs a local number. Registration, shop opening hours, and changing the physical SIM add work after arrival.
- A travel eSIM keeps the physical SIM slot free and can be installed before departure. It still requires an unlocked, eSIM-capable phone and may provide data only.

## Useful data tasks in Mexico

Facts checked: 2026-09-21

- Finding the correct airport meeting or rideshare area.
- Navigating the Mexico City Metro with a saved route.
- Messaging accommodation or a transfer driver in Spanish.
- Downloading intercity and coastal routes before a long drive.

## Mexico-specific checks

Facts checked: 2026-09-21

- Check Mexico separately from any U.S. or North America plan label.
- Keep addresses and pickup instructions in Spanish.
- Do not depend on service for a long highway or remote beach transfer.
- Use official coverage maps as comparison evidence rather than a street-level promise.

## Before you leave

- Confirm that the exact phone model supports eSIM and is not carrier locked.
- Save the installation details somewhere available without mobile data.
- Download the first arrival route and any tickets that must work offline.
- Keep the home SIM active only if you understand its roaming and incoming-call charges.

## Install before the airport becomes urgent

- Install over reliable Wi-Fi, label the new line, and leave it disabled until the plan instructions say to activate it.
- On arrival, select the eSIM for mobile data. Enable data roaming only on that line when the plan requires it.
- If data does not start, check the selected data line, roaming setting, APN instructions, and automatic network selection before deleting the eSIM.
- Do not scan a QR code displayed on the same phone. Keep the manual activation details as the fallback.

## Questions travelers ask

### Is Mexico in EU roaming?

No. You need a separate roaming option, travel eSIM, or local service.

### Does a U.S. plan include Mexico?

Some do, but only the reviewed plan's country list can confirm it.

### Should I install before arriving in Mexico City?

Yes. It gives you data for airport transport without depending on terminal Wi-Fi.

### Can I rely on data during a resort transfer?

Do not make it the only plan. Save the driver's contact, destination, and route first.

### Will a data-only eSIM let me call a hotel?

Use an internet calling app, or choose a reviewed plan that explicitly includes voice.

### How should I use IFT coverage maps?

Compare broad operator patterns and routes, then retain offline information for important legs.

## What this guide can and cannot confirm

- This is desk research, not a record of a personal network test in the country.
- Coverage changes by operator, building, terrain, congestion, and device. A national source cannot promise service at a specific address.
- No plan, price, operator, refund term, or support promise appears here unless it passes DeployedSim's separate supplier review.
